It is the rare Wall St. investment banker who does not rush to get his hands on the new Merc to “show” his friends.

I believe this is a symptom. The problem is how we are becoming a more outside-focussed society, rather than focusing on ourselves in our lives. Its easier to be happier (even though for a short while) that way.
